I join the overwhelming majority of Americans to demand an amendment to the United States Constitution to end the domination of big money in politics and give voice to all Americans.

I will stand with all Americans, without regard to party or other differences, and urge all candidates and elected officials to do the same, in order to pass and ratify such a constitutional amendment as soon as possible.

A Resolution Calling on Congress to Propose a 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution to Overturn Citizens United Would Make Michigan the 20th State to Go on Record in Support of a 28th Amendment

Lansing, MI –  June 14, 2017 – Senator Rebekah Warren (D-Ann Arbor) and Representative Jeremy Moss (D-Southfield) will have resolutions (SR.77 and HR.125) on the Senate and House floors for co-sponsorship today urging Congress to propose an amendment to the United States Constitution to allow the regulation of independent political expenditures by corporations.  If these resolutions pass, it would make Michigan the 20th state to call for a 28th Amendment to overturn Citizens United v. FEC and return to common sense limits on election spending.

Well over $100 million was spent on the 2016 elections in Michigan, and the 2018 election is projected to be one of the most expensive elections in state history. Just 40 wealthy families made $44 million in political contributions in the last cycle. When politicians operated in a system dominated by the wealthy few, the voices and interests of most Michigan families are ignored.

“Our elections should be in the hands of real people – citizens not corporations,” said Senator Rebekah Warren, “When companies have the power to meddle in elections, the voices of everyday electors get overwhelmed by their money and insider influence. Repealing Citizens United puts the power of our democracy back in the hands of voters.”

“Democracy fails when power is concentrated in the hands of the few, “ said Representative Jeremy Moss, “We cannot say we’re a government of and for the people when special interests and corporations can use their money to control message and action. Everyone, regardless of their background or financial status, should have a place at the table, and an opportunity for their voices to be heard and their needs to be addressed. Overturning this ridiculous case is an important step in restoring our democracy.”

American Promise, a national non-partisan, non-profit organization is supporting the citizen-led push in Michigan and across the country with one goal: winning the 28th Amendment to get big money out of politics.

“Americans agree on this one issue – we need to get big money out of politics and restore a government of, by, and for the people with a 28th Amendment,” said Jeff Clements Jeff Clements, co-founder and President of American Promise.

“The 28th Amendment would repair our Constitutional foundation of equal citizenship, and restore the principle of ‘one person, one vote.’” said Ben Gubits, Associate Director, American Promise.

19 states and over 800 cities and towns have passed 28th Amendment resolutions with cross-partisan support.  In Montana and Colorado, voters have approved 28th Amendment ballot initiatives by 75-25%. In November, Washington State became the 18th State to call for the 28th Amendment, with a voter initiative passing by wide margins in every region and every Congressional district of the state.

On May 16, 2017, the Secretary of State’s office in Wyoming certified a proposed ballot initiative calling for a 28th Amendment to overturn Citizens United.  Citizens in Wyoming now have 18 month to gather and submit 38,818 signatures for the initiative to appear on the ballot in 2018.  Similar initiatives and resolutions are underway across the country.

In 2015, Michigan was given the worst score by the Center for Public Integrity for transparency within its state government. This amendment would allow Michigan legislators to set campaign finance limits that prevent the anonymous and untraceable spending that has been seen in the elections in recent years and limit overwhelming influence by an individual.

American Promise inspires, empowers, and organizes Americans from across the political spectrum to build support for the 28th Amendment community by community, state by state, to drive the Amendment out of Congress and to the States for ratification.  To learn more about American Promise visit www.AmericanPromise.net
